Q. What is the first thing one should do after returning for a ten day vacation?
If you answered by saying “get a puppy!” then you are on par with Eliza and I. Yes, for many people there are probably lots of other things to do, but for us, it was puppy time.
We’ve been talking about getting a dog for over a year now, and on Monday we found out that our local Humane Society shelter had a litter of new puppies that fit our desire, so that evening we went to check them out and now we have a dog.
Here name is Ceres, which is, in chronological order of name usage, a Roman goddess of agriculture, a character in Shakespeare’s The Tempest, and a dwarf planet/largest object in the asteroid belt. She is a mix breed of an Australian Cattle Dog and a German Shepherd. And all around she is just a great bundle of adorable. Here is some visual proof:
I have been very excited about getting Ceres because I have pretty much wanted another dog since the one I had growing up died when I was a sophomore in high school. Until now it was not really all that feasible for me to have one. The biggest reason I had not gotten one was because I work all day long M-F and would not be able to come home and spend time with the dog. Add to that financial considerations and a few other factors (like living in “no pet” house) and it just wasn’t going to happen. But now those concerns are not the same and so a puppy is what we got. Having not grown up as a dog person, Eliza really wanted her first experiences to be bonding with a puppy. So far this seems to be going great and we all love the little girl. I am sure there will be some moments of frustration and difficulty in our future, but fortunately we’re patient people and good pet owners. I don’t foresee anything we can’t handle. It’s great to have a dog again!
